Dinoflagellates are a group of flagellate unicellular organisms which are considered a type of algae. Their name is from the Greek dinos meaning "whirling" and flagella which means whip. This is a reference to their characteristic whirling motion as they move through the water using two flagella: a longitudinal flagellum and a transverse flagellum.

Dinoflagellates also have few or no nucleosomes associated with their DNA and a unique pattern of mitosis (Spector, 1984). Because these characteristics are so different from both eukaryotic and prokaryotic cells, a new intermediate kingdom, Mesokaryota, was once proposed for them (Dodge, 1965). comparative alkaline phosphatase characteristics of the algal bloom dinoflagellates prorocentrum donghaiense and alexandrium catenella, and the diatom skeletonema costatum 1 Linjian Ou Research Center for Harmful Algae and Aquatic Environment, Jinan University, 510632 Guangzhou, Guangdong, China Dinoflagellates may produce their own light chemically. The Dinoflagellata are sometimes called Pyrrhophyta , meaning "fire plants". This is because some species are capable of bioluminescence, in which chemicals made by the organism produce light in a chemical reaction. The dinoflagellates begin to glow as it gets dark, but will brighten considerably when agitated, such as in the wake of a ship.

Dinoflagellates are fascinating protists, mostly unicellular, distributed in environments ranging from the polar to tropical seas, hypersaline, coastal, estuarine and oceanic waters. There are about 2,377 dinoflagellate species recognized.

Dinoflagellates are golden brown photosynthetic protists, belonging to class Dinophyceae (pyrophyta). They are mainly marine, though few are fresh water forms. 2020-02-29 The characteristics that unite the dinoflagellates and make them unique (Table I) also make determining their phylogenetic affinities difficult (Table II).Dino-flagellates have a nucleus with permanently condensed chromosomes and unique bases, which lacks histones and nucleosomes (Soyer-Gobillard, 1996), although stages in some complex life histories may have a more typical eukaryotic nucleus CHARACTERISTICS OFDINOFLAGELLATES Dinoflagellates have two flagella.

In coastal regions, the primary source of flow-agitated bioluminescence is dinoflagellates. These single-celled organisms are common members of the plankton—tiny marine plants, animals or bacteria that float on or near the ocean’s surface. Bioluminescent dinoflagellates range in size from about 30 µ

Most are marine, though some live in freshwater habitats. The group is an important component of phytoplankton in all but the colder seas and is an important link in the food Dinoflagellates are neither plants nor animals, but many have plant-like characteristics such as photosynthesis, cellulose-containing walls, and synthesis of starch as an energy storage product. Animal-like features of many dinoflagellates include phagotrophy (feeding on prey or hosts), rapid swimming, eyespots, and trichocysts.
